Tom Stuart on Monads

02 Jun 2015

Monads. Intimidating category-theoretic definition and scores of blog posts with overwrought explanations or metaphors had my eyes glazing over each time I approached learning what they are. Tom Stuart’s talk at BaRuCo ‘14 clearly and succinctly motivates their usage. Though it’s grounded in Ruby, you don’t really need an understanding of the language itself to follow along with the broader lesson.

The Lightning Field

20 May 2015

Should you or I ever make it back to New Mexico, this is the first sight to see. The Lightning Field is an installation by American sculptor Walter De Maria located in western New Mexico.

From the Dia Art Foundation:

It is comprised of 400 polished stainless steel poles installed in a grid array measuring one mile by one kilometer. The poles – two inches in diameter and averaging 20 feet and 7½ inches in height – are spaced 220 feet apart and have solid pointed tips that define a horizontal plane. A sculpture to be walked in as well as viewed, The Lightning Field is intended to be experienced over an extended period of time. A full experience of The Lightning Field does not depend upon the occurrence of lightning, and visitors are encouraged to spend as much time as possible in the field, especially during sunset and sunrise. In order to provide this opportunity, Dia offers overnight visits during the months of May through October.

Between already working on KZSU’s Wednesday Night Live, commuting to and from work, and trying to maintain a social life, I was feeling a strain. After some time off, I may return, and probably under the guise of a new show title.
